Last Friday, my mom, nieces and I went bike riding downtown on the Detroit RiverFront. I rode last summer when I was home visiting and had so much fun that I wanted my mom and nieces to have the experience too. We rented bikes from WheelHouse Detroit. It took my mom and I a minute to figure out what bikes worked for us. My nieces didn’t have any problems. Just a little seat adjustment and they were good to go. The first bike they gave me was a cruiser where you push back on the pedals to stop. I’m used to riding bikes with hand brakes. I knew if I rode that bike than I would forget how to brake. So I ended up switching my bike.

Now my mother was another story. Mind you, I have never seen her ride a bike in my life. To be fair, my mom has broken her ankle and had back surgery from a fall and is very cautious so that it doesn’t happen again. I’ll give it to her, she tried. But that fear wouldn’t let her win.

So this happened.

She tried. I have to give it to her.

Then this happened.

This is more like it!

And we were finally ready to ride. I was so proud of my mom hanging out with us and doing the damn thing on her tricycle. She got so much love on it. One dude offered to buy it on the spot.

Auntie has to get a picture.

We rode the riverfront from Milliken State Park to Cobo Arena twice. The rain even held out for us. It rained before we got there and rained as soon as we got back in the car to leave. Thank you, mother nature! I shot a little video (thanks to my oldest niece) highlighting Milliken State Park. Detroit really is very beautiful. #PureMichigan

I need to get my bike out of storage so I can bike. I rode everywhere in NYC. I’ve become sedimentary (and fluffy) since I’ve been home. The weather is getting warmer and I need to get out. I think I’m going to get my mother a tricycle so she can join me. It’s more fun when you have a biking partner.

What do you think?
