I was in my “I Love the 80s” glory last week. I had the chance to see Boy George and Culture Club for the first time in Windsor, Ontario at Caesars Windsor Casino.  Let me just say that my three favorite groups and singers growing up were Lionel Richie, Hall & Oates and Culture Club. The beautiful thing about music in the 80s is that it was colorless – so to speak. Everyone listened to the same type of music. Or at least that’s how I remember it. Granted the only person of color MTV was showing on its station was Michael Jackson. I still rocked out to Pat Benatar, danced to Freestyle music from Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam and was trying to break dance on cardboard to Whodini. Most of us were enjoying the same sound back then.

Culture Club
Boy George looked and sounded great. His eye makeup was on point per usual. Many of the concert goers came dressed as 1980s Boy George with a blond wig and white lab coat. Everyone is talking about Catlyn Jenner but Boy George has been breaking gender rules since his start. After each set, Boy George talked to the crowd. He said that when his record label sent their album to stations in the United States that they didn’t send it with a cover. The label wanted the stations to hear the music without judging the group on their appearance. He said had he known he would have been mad at the time. But everything worked out.

I had a ball at the Culture Club concert. They played all my favorites and some songs that I’ve never heard before. It was great. And this is still keeping with my new year resolution of traveling every month. I’m 8 for 8. I’m really excited for my trip next month. It’s less than a month away and I haven’t booked a place to stay. I’m such a procrastinator. Goodness!
