Yesterday I volunteered at the World Maker Faire. Have any of you heard of it? I hadn’t either until I came across it on a Michigan website and saw that it was taking place in New York also. The World Maker Faire was created by Make Magazine. It is the World’s Largest DIY Festival. Think of it as a huge science fair but it has crafts and DIY projects too. You can also see shows and listen to guest speakers. It was held at New York Hall of Science in Queens, NY.
Being that I’m frugal, I decided to volunteer instead of paying $25 for a ticket. It was easy. I only had to dedicate 4 hours of volunteering and I got a day pass to the fair. Once my shift was up, I was free to roam the fair grounds. I also got a nice red T-shirt too!
I ended up working at the information booth inside of the New York Hall of Science. The event was both inside and outside, but the majority of the exhibits were outside. I was so glad I didn’t have to work outside because it was too cold.
My job was easy. All I had to do was answer questions. Most of the questions asked were "Where is the bathroom?" and "Where is the main stage?". I had that down pat. If I didn’t know the answer to a question, I used the binder they gave us with all of the info or the World Maker Fair App I downloaded to my phone. They had so many volunteers that I was relieved early of my duties. Which was fine with me.
There were so many DIY booths on the grounds. BurdaStyle was there and you could sit at a sewing machine and sew a project. There was even a booth where you could hand sew leather wallets.
For $6 you could make your own personal soap using whatever color and fragrance you wanted.
There were many technological exhibits including robots as well.
I thought this was cute exhibit. I had a great shot until someone’s bad kids had to go up to the car and touch it. *sigh*
The Maker Faire is a wonderful family event to take your kids too. They have so many activities for the kids and for adults. I can’t wait to bring my nieces to the one in Michigan next year.
