If someone were to ask me what the least favorite part of my body is, I would say aside from my feet it would be my armpits. Why? My armpits are dark and discolored from the rest of my body. Even when there isn’t any hair under them, it still looks like I have globs of hair because of the discoloration. It’s so embarrassing. Although I don’t avoid wearing tank tops, you will hardly ever see me wear one without a denim jacket, blazer or cardigan over it. I seriously really do HATE my armpits. I have even thought about using bleaching cream or foundation to cover up the discoloration. Yikes!
Through my research for a cure of dark underarm skin, I have learned that it is caused by hyperpigmentation due to trauma to the area. Hyperpigmentation is a pigmentation disorder. Pigmentation disorders occur when skin cells become damaged or unhealthy. This affects their melanin production and, ultimately, the color of the skin.
While there are many reasons why hyperpigmentation can occur in the armpits, in my case it was due to excessive shaving. I have since learned that it irritated my skin and caused the dark discoloration. Some of the other causes that can lead to dark underarms are the following…
- Shaving
- Dead skin buildup or improper washing
- Friction
- Hair removing creams (Nair, Veet..etc.)
- Anti-Perspirants or Deodorant
- A medical condition called acanthosis nigricans.
Once you identify the root of the problem, there are several remedies to control it. Hair removing creams contain harsh chemicals that can cause an adverse skin reaction in many people. When used over long periods of time, these products can cause permanent damage to the sensitive skin of the underarms. In my case it was the excessive shaving. While shaving is said to cause tiny skin abrasions that can darken the skin as they heal. Another problem with shaving is that it removes the hair from just below the surface of the skin. The remaining part of the hair beneath the skin makes the skin look slightly darker, especially in people with dark hair. So I now wax my armpits. In the short time I have been doing it, I have already seen improvement. My underarm skin has lightened quite a bit. And the ingrown hairs and razor bumps are healing. Instead of waxing, you can also opt for laser hair removal. Do note that permanent hair removal is expensive and doesn’t always work with women of color. Do your research!
If it is the deodorant causing your armpits to darken, you may choose another brand or avoid using it altogether. There are some wonderful natural deodorants on the market that won’t have you stinking either.
If skin friction is the reason for the hyperpigmentation, you can wear loose-fitting clothes.
I have pulled together some additional dark armpit solutions below. They are all natural options and may even aid in lightening the skin.
Ex-foliate – Scrub your underarms with a loofah when bathing to gently but persistently rub away all the sweat, impurities and deodorant leftovers. Also, use a pumice stone twice a week to help whiten underarms by removing the built up dead cells.
Baking Soda – Some people use baking soda instead of deodorants since they can cause dark armpits. Baking soda aids in curing the darkness of the underarms and also provides relief from body odor. (Double win!) To make natural skin scrub at home, take some baking soda and add some water to make a thick paste. Apply the paste to clean armpits. Rinse after ten minutes. This will help to remove any dead skin cells accumulated in the underarm which is one of the main reasons for dark underarms. It will also help to unclog the skin pores.
Coconut Oil or Vitamin E Oil – Coconut oil or Vitamin E Oil is another good option to get rid of dark underarms. Before showering, massage dark underarms with coconut oil for ten to fifteen minutes. Then rinse the area properly with mild soap and lukewarm water. This needs to be done daily to reduce the darkening of underarms.
Potato – Potato is another great bleaching agent because of the mild acidic property it contains. There are two ways to use potato. First, take a thin slice of potato and use it to rub the armpit skin. Or grate the potato and apply the juice to the affected area, allow it to dry for ten minutes and then wash it with lukewarm water. Repeat this process daily for better and faster result. One good part about this remedy is that potato will never cause skin irritation.
Lemon – Lemon juice is among the most effective remedies for dark armpits. The natural bleaching agent of the lemon will lighten the skin color of armpits while its citric acid will help kill the bacteria. All you have to do is to make a paste of honey, lemon juice and sugar. Heat the mixture lightly and apply it on the armpits. Rinse it off, after twenty minutes. Repeat this every three to four days, for best results. You can also apply a mixture of lemon juice and glycerin on the dark area of underarms. Leave it for 6 hours (overnight would be the best time) and then wash with water and soap. Or mix the juice of half a lemon with a table spoon of cucumber juice. Apply the mixture on the affected area and leave for 20 minutes. Use this concoction every alternate day to see results. Keep in mind that the above processes take time.
Vinegar – Vinegar is good for dark underarms. Mix rice flour and vinegar to form a thick paste. Apply this paste on dark armpits after taking a hot shower. Allow the paste to dry for ten to fifteen minutes and then rinse off with warm water. This process will lighten the skin tone and kill all the germs and bacteria which feed on the dead skin cells causing underarm odor.
Homemade Tendskin – Tend Skin is a liquid astringent that improves the appearance of unsightly razor bumps, ingrown hairs, razor burn and redness from shaving, waxing, and electrolysis. But it’s very costly. Try making your own with this Tend Skin recipe.
Be realistic! Although the above preventive measures and dark armpit solutions can be very effective in tackling the condition, it will take time. You will not see results in a few days. You have to be patient and consistent. It’s also important to rinse and moisturize the skin after each application. Please note that it’s always better to consult a doctor rather than trying home remedies but in most cases dark armpits are more cosmetic than medical problems.

A lot of people frown up at me when I tell them I gave up Antiperspirants. When my aunt got Breast Cancer they found so much of the Chemicals clogging up her lymph-nodes. Then I got this huge knot under my arm. It was super bad…i got surgery on it and had to give up deodorant for a week or two. In that time I started noticing that my white shirts didn’t have stains and my underarms starting getting lighter. That’s when I decided to start using natural deodorants. Nothing with aluminum. I tried Toms, Baking Soda, then I finally found that Arm and Hammer makes a aluminum free deodorant. That initial moment of my body releasing a lot of toxins that aluminum clogs up was so bad though. A year later my under arms are much lighter even with shaving every 3 days or so and that Arm and Hammer doesn’t cause stains. I sweat but it doesn’t smell so bad. The trick was using a fresh razor too so you don’t have to drag it too hard across your skin.
I still have a little ways to go though but they are much lighter. I still want to try the Potato or the Vinegar tricks and see what happens.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I have been reading recently about how deodorant is linked to Breast Cancer. I have been looking to possibly change my deodorant but I’m just fearful of having B.O. That’s so ironic that you have switched to Arm & Hammer. I recently switched my toothpaste to Arm & Hammer and my teeth haven’t felt cleaner. I may have to give the deodorant a try. I really appreciate the feedback and suggestions.
Arm and Hammer toothpaste makes me gag. Literally. I know what you mean. To be totally honest I got my surgery on my arm pit on a Thursday…I basically let myself be without the Antiperspirant for the weekend. I had to clean my underarms at work with wipes throughout the day. It was bad to be honest, like I didn’t do anything that would make me sweat. But I ended up finding the Arm and Hammer later on when the Burts Natural didn’t work and the Toms natural didn’t work. it took a while for me to get used to the idea of reapplying. But I will tell you this. My doctor was hellbent on saying these lumps I kept getting weren’t linked to my deodorant. i did heavy research and figured out that a lot of people were getting them because the Aluminum clogs your pores and that is what was happening to my arms. I haven’t had one in a year, no issues. Those lumps would come and go, and do all sort of gross things in the middle of day. I think giving it a try is a long term commitment though. I also use those Facial Scrubbie that you get at the drug store for 99 cents on my under arms too, takes a lot of dead skin off but the key is to rub gently.
Great Post. I suffer from this so I will certainly be trying these recommended solutions. xoxo.

Thanks for stopping by. Let me know what remedy you choose and how it works out for you.
I wonder if a chemical peel would work. Have you seen a dermatologist about it? They may be able to assist.
A chemical peel will absolutely work but it can be costly because you will need to go several times. Plus it may not be covered by insurance.
Thank you so much for this post. I’ve been side eye-ing my underarms for quite some time because it’s so dark. I’ve been contemplating going the wax route and now after reading your post, I def will go for it. Also, gonna try one of this at-home remedies, as well.
I’m not sure if a natural deodorant will help you, but it is a safe alternative to aluminum-based anti-perspirants. I’d suggest giving Lavilin a whirl. It’s considered one of the best ones out there, especially if you have sensitive skin!
Thanks…. I really liked the post and i will surely try out some of this stuff…!:)
Let me know how it turns out!
I use AUBREY Calendula Blossom Natural Deoderant Spray.. it smells good and doesn’t have the
aluminum that the other deoderants have. its true, you do have to avoid activities that’ll cause you to
sweat when you are using the natural products , a lot more than when you use the “regular”
deoderants. its amazing what we are doing to ourselves with all the chemicals we put on! Good luck ladies 🙂
I’m all for using natural deodorant but my biggest fear is being funky. Nothing worse than smelling like B.O.!
I had a lump on the inner part of my breast, non cancerous, but most certainly not because of deodorant. I can’t do without deo, where I live it is very hot.
For the blackening, a simple gentle skin bleach works great and use wax strips instead of a razor.
I’m so happy that your lump was benign. I noted not using the razor in this post. But I would love to know what skin bleach you use.
I remember I got a dark underarms caused by deodorants. I tried everything except medical treatments. But then I went to Marina Medical Centre and had a whitening treatment. Glad that it turned out well.
Can you use like 2 procedure at a time? For example to use baking soda procedure day while also doing the lemon honey procedure every 3-4 day? Thanks
baking soda everyday*
I started using a natural deordorant and it turned my pits dark….i am glad i made the switch but now my pits are dark and i am light….i will try some of these remedies.
I started using a natural deodorant as well called native… i love it and for a natural one, it works quite well and smells very nice but after 4 months of using it ive noticed significant darkening of my skin… Im Italian/Swedish and am baffled. Could a natural deodorant be causing this? It is the only thing i have changed recently. Thinking about going back to my suave clinical strenght but am concerned about all that aluminum in my future.
Hi everyone!
How are you?
I’ve been using coconut oil under my arms for a few days now, so I hope it works.
Have any of you used it? Any results?
And I would also like to know if it’s okay to rub the C.O after my shower and leave it on then put some baby powder on top?
Will it have any effect?
Please reply..
Thank you!!
Applying apple cider vinegar really is helping me. I just apply it everyday in the morning n evening. After 3 weeks i am observing very slight change but I’ll be patient.
I also had darkening from Native. I googled it and evidently, baking soda can cause darkening in some people. Kind of ironic since it is also frequently used as a solution to darkening. I switched to the Walmart brand of natural deodorant which does not have baking soda and no more darkening. Doesn’t smell quite as nice as the Native though.
