Last night was the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC annual Met Gala. Although I love a good red carpet, I don’t usually cover red carpets on the blog. I feel like every blogger does a ‘best of’ recap. You see one, you see them all. Right? Well after seeing last night’s red carpet at the #MetGala2015 on social media, I saw a common theme. Not the actual China theme of the event honoring the opening of the Costume Institute’s new exhibit, “China: Through the Looking Glass.” I think 95% of the guests missed the mark on that one. Seriously, was it that hard to dress for this year’s theme at the Met Gala? But that’s a whole other conversation.
My twitter buddy Tonia Lee and I were chatting about how many of the fashions were recycled or we have seen them before at some point after I tweeted a picture of Beyoncé in her Met Gala dress next to Vanessa Bell Calloway in a similar look from the movie Coming to America. It got us questioning whether or not some of the fashions were actually “inspired” or just plain copy cats.
So I’ve compiled a list below where you be the judge. Were these looks inspired by past fashions? Or were they just downright copied from seasons past?
Let’s start with Beyoncé. Was she channeling Zumanda royalty with her Givenchy gown at the Met Ball?
Kim Kardashian who wore an embellished Roberto Cavalli by Peter Dundas gown has already admitted that she was inspired by Cher. But that was after everyone on social media pointed out the similarities between the two. I think that was to deflect from the #BeyHive commenting that she copied Beyoncé’s 2012 Met Gala look. What do you think?
I may be giving away my age on this one, but back in the day. I’m talking back in the urban world day there was this designer named Gigi Hunter who used to make these crochet dresses. You were doing something if you owned a Gigi Hunter dress. So when I saw Kendall Jenner’s beaded Calvin Klein Collection dress at the Met Gala, it reminded me of a Gigi Hunter crochet dress. These crochet dresses were before the internet and social media so I couldn’t find many images. But you get the idea.
Although Rihanna wore one of my favorite looks of the night, she did remind me of Scarlett from Gone with the Wind in her yellow cape designed by Chinese designer Guo Pei. I think she was one of the few that got the theme right. Fun fact: Yellow was the emperor’s color in Imperial China and is held as the symbolic color of the five legendary emperors of ancient China. Yellow often decorates royal palaces, altars and temples, and the color was used in the robes and attire of the emperors. So Rihanna was on point.
Also, are we tired of the same silhouette on the red carpet? Sheer, barely there dress with a long train. Do we want to see more clothes on our celebs for a change? Or am I just hating because I’m a little fluffy.
Since we are on the subject, Rihanna, Selena Gomez and Solange were my favorite looks of the night.
What were your favorites? Did you see more inspired looks on the red carpet?

I’d have to agree with you, Rihanna nailed the theme this year. Just looking at her dress reminds me of a good old Kung Fu film. lol
lol at the Gone with the Wind comparison, so true! She worked that yellow though!
