Cruising to Limón, Costa Rica

What can I say about Costa Rica? It was one of the places I really wanted to visit while on my vacation. Limón (Spanish for “lemon”) is the biggest city on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. The people of Puerto Limón can trace their roots all the way back to Italy, Jamaica and China. Until 1948, the Costa Rican government didn’t even recognize Afro-Caribbean people as citizens and instituted a “travel ban” where they couldn’t move outside of the city. Man, it’s hard for black and brown folks EVERYWHERE! Eventually the ban was lifted.

Unfortunately Limón doesn’t have that many good beaches and most are infested with sharks. Yikes! However, there is much more to do in Costa Rica. You can watch giant sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches of Tortuguero; go animal and bird spotting, snorkel coral reefs in Cahuita or Punta Uva; and surf Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. Limón province also has the highest proportion of protected land in the country because of its many wildlife reserves, tropical rainforests and national parks. So if you plan to ever visit, be sure to see the banana farms and rainforests.

It rained AND rained while I was in Costa Rica

The area’s diverse microclimates mean that there is no best time to visit the Caribbean coast. And this is so true. It rained the whole time so I didn’t really get to see much of Limón, Costa Rica. It rained…monsooned…and then rained again. As I mentioned before, my travel partners weren’t having any parts of the rain so I ventured out and explored a little bit of the city. Check out some of the photos I captured from my visit. Because it was raining very hard, I took most of my pictures with my iPhone.
