I’m sure by now you have heard about #BlackTwitter coming for Marie Claire magazine because of a tweet they sent that basically implied that Kendall Jenner took the braids you get on a Caribbean vacation for $2 a plait to an ‘epic’ level. *sigh* It’s so hard not to be annoyed by mainstream media’s disregard for things that black people have been doing for years but passing it off as something new. Remember the whole Miley twerking incident? I have been booty poopin’ for years. The dance goes all the way back to ancient African tribal dances.
Our likeness and style has been jacked by the mainstream since the beginning. There are so many examples. Elvis stole his dance moves from Jackie Wilson, Bo’ Derrick bit off of black women with her braids, Miley’s rhythm-less self tried to twerk and the list goes on and on. It just burns me up that we aren’t the ones profiting. Have you been to throwingshade.com? I’ll let you marinate on that.
What bothered me about the tweet was the wording. Kendall Jenner’s braid style is not new, bold nor epic. They should have just said “Celebs wearing the undercut braid” and kept it moving. This is why mainstream media needs to hire more people of color. Diversity is key!

To be fair, the tweet was linked to an article about celebs wearing ‘undercut braids’ and listed examples of black celebs too. But for real though, does anyone know what is an undercut braid? It looks like corn rows to me. Marie Claire saw the error of their tweet (after #blacktwitter got all up in their mentions) and apologized.
Do you think twitter overacted to the Marie Claire tweet?
How do you feel about culture vultures? Do you think it exists?
