I always knew that I wanted to get out of Michigan and move to a big city. My choices were Chicago, L.A., Atlanta or NYC. My brother actually ended up moving to New York first. And every chance I got, I came to visit because I fell in love with the city. I knew that I had to live here. I hatched a plan in my head on how I was going to get this fine city. I saw that the job I was working for at the time was hiring in their east coast location. I told my boss that I wanted to transfer. And since I was a good employee, she made it happen. Fortunately for me, the job I had at the time paid for my relocation. Lord knows I wouldn’t have been able to do it on my dime. Honestly, that was the only way I was going to get here.
Now New York is a beast of its own. I had to learn that the hard way many years ago. From the abrasive personalities of co-workers, the man sneezing (snot and all) on me on the subway to witnessing a homeless man sitting but naked on a bus stop bench singing to himself. This city has made me #NYTough. As much as I love this city, sometimes I need to take a break away. Us New Yorkers (I’ve been here over 10 years so I think I can call myself one) appreciate it when we can find comedy in our daily adventures.
Last week I had the pleasure of attending the #NYTough Comedy Showcase at Caroline’s on Broadway. The fun event featured stand-up from Marlon Wayans, Michael Che, Sherri Shepard, and Michelle Buteau. And it was the break I needed indeed. Even if it was just for a few hours.

I’m #NYTough because I was born in Brooklyn and raised in the “forgotten borough” and therefore know how to deal with negative (and crazy) people, especially growing up as a gay man. Went from having problems with hearing and speech as a child to never silencing my voice – especially when it’s important – and running social media accounts as a job.
my continuous determination no matter how many letdowns and obstacles in my way. i will conquer!
