Let It Go, Let It Flow!

I should be ashamed of myself.  I have not had my hair trimmed since last November.  Horrible I know.   I only prefer Anthony Dickey to cut my hair.  I have had disasters when I let someone else cut it.  I have been going to Dickey since he did my big chop at the Louis Licari Salon over 5 years ago. I followed him to the Tina Pearson Salon and now he owns his own salon called Hair Rules. 

Dickey is amazing with scissors. He is very knowledgeable in natural hair care having written the book Hair Rules! on the subject too.  Dickey also has a line of hair products titled … Hair Rules of course. The Quench Conditioner and Kinky Curling Cream are my staples.

Although my hair had grown, it was badly damaged. Single stranded knots are the devil!  I normally go in to get a "dusting" which is a very light trim, but I had to get a "cut" because my ends were too far gone to save.  I didn’t mind because I prefer healthy hair over length any day.  Hear is a collage I put together of some iPhone pictures I took while getting my hair done.

I have friends that frown at the price, but it’s no different when I used to get my hair done weekly.  Except this time I only get it cut 3 times a year (although this year was an exception). Adding up the cost of my weekly hair appointments is more than the price I pay to get my hair done 3 times a year.  So it averages out in my opinion.  And since I’m into saving money and frugal shopping, you know I would not pay a lot of money if I didn’t think it was worth it.  There are some times when splurging on items are necessary and my hair is one of them.

There are many talented stylists at the salon too.  Seeing Dickey is not your only option.  I suggest my NYC natural hair readers go in for a curly consult too.  They will wet your hair down, put Hair Rule products in your hair and tell you what works for you for free.  (At least it used to be free.) My mother had a curly consult a couple of years ago and has been using his products ever since on her natural hair.  Now her friends make me send care packages of Hair Rule products to them.  Mind you, they can easily order it themselves on line or go to Ulta.  But I guess it’s easier if I do it.

So the lesson I learned is that I can not go a year without getting my hair trimmed.  Dickey suggests that a trim should be every 3-4 months.  I have already put it in my calendar to make an appointment in the next 3 months.
