I have a social media goes wrong story for you. The other night I went out to eat to this new Mexican restaurant, Cantina 1838, that opened up around the corner from me in Harlem. The food tasted delicious and the ambiance was great. So I was a little excited and checked into the restaurant on Yelp. Now normally I wait until I’m leaving to check-in but didn’t see the harm since I was blocks from my home and not by myself.
So I’m sitting there having a good time enjoying the vibe when the waitress asks me if my name is Toya. In which I replied yes. Now I’m thinking whether or not we know each other. And I scan the room to see perhaps there was someone in the restaurant I knew. She then proceeds to tell me I have a phone call. Now I’m really dumbfounded. Anyone who is important to me would call my cell phone. And no one knew that I was at the restaurant. My mind is racing and I’m thinking about all the possibilities of who it could be. Maybe something happened?
Nope! Instead it was some weirdo who told me that he has been following my Twitter timeline and saw me check-in at the restaurant. He also started talking about how he wanted to meet me and things just got weird after that. I quickly told him I wasn’t interested and hung up the phone on him.

Whoa! Talk about social media going wrong. Sure, I have met my Twitter followers in person and it wasn’t awkward or weird. It was actually cool. I have several friends that I have met because of social media. But this dude was creepy. Really creepy.
So the lesson here boys and girls is to be very careful about when and where you check-in to places. Also take inventory of who is following you on social media. I actually have a tab set up on my Tweetdeck that tells me who are my new followers. I have been neglecting that tab lately. It’s time to go through and do some cleaning and block folks.
But I would like to mention that Cantina 1838 was the bomb! So much so that I had it again the next day. I hope I don’t where it out by going to it all the time. The food was delicious, the service was great and the vibe was cool. It’s now one of my favorite restaurants in Harlem. I absolutely love Mexican food. Maybe it’s because an itty bitty part of me may have some Mexican roots. Read about it here.
Do you have any weird social media moments? I’d love to hear about them.

Chile Bye. Do I need to come over there?
That’s more than weird.
I’m glad that you’re OK.
Ha! I was more annoyed than scared.
Wow!! I am in shock. I check in all the time!! I can’t believe dude called you–talk about creepy!!!!
The kicker is when he started to read off information about me. What a creep!
I have never had something so wild happen, but I’m sure NOT to check into spots where my daughter plays or won’t be with me.
Now, I’ll make sure to watch out.
Thanks, and sorry that happened.
I think if I had children I would be more careful. I’m sure this may be a new type of stalking.
Thanks for this cautionary tale. I usually wait until I’m leaving before I check in, I’ll be very careful about checking in.
We ALL need to be careful on social media. This was a learning lesson.
Whoa! Creepy! I’m a paranoid NYer so I always check who’s following me on places like Foursquare because Chunks may be with me. I can’t believe he actually called for you!!
I like to check-in to places too just in case I don’t make it home. At least they will be able to pinpoint where I was last.
Whoa! That was totally freaky. I almost always check-in after I leave, but now I’ll be sure to do it every time.
I will be doing that from now on too! Sheesh!
Wow that’s creepy! Guess I have to be careful about checking in. I don’t on Facebook for that reason but usually do w/ four square, but mostly at restaurants.
I like to check in for the deals. Sometimes you can get free drinks or dessert. But I didn’t think checking in on Yelp would trigger a crazy person.
WOW! That is crazy as hell!
Crazy is right!!
this is my worst nightmare! at least he didn’t just SHOW UP! but still, too much. glad you’re safe and thanks for sharing!
I couldn’t even imagine what would have happened if he showed up!!
That is soooooooo scary. I don’t usually check in, but I will never EVER do that again. lol
I’m not going to let this fool stop me from checking in to places but I will be more careful.
Well, thank goodness he called first instead of just showing up. That’s still creepy and a bit scary though. That’s one of the reasons I’ve steered clear of checking in period. You just never know who is stalking you on the web. Even the most normal of followers can turn out to be creepers.
I’m definitely going to be more careful from now on. What a crazy experience!!
OMG fellow BLM Girl! That was sooooo creeepy! I never thought about something like that ever happening! Glad it was just a phone call and not a “show up”! EEK!! Great post! On my toes now! lol
Right? You only read about this type of stuff happening. Never in real life!
Totally loving the stockings! So cute!
