I have a social media goes wrong story for you. The other night I went out to eat to this new Mexican restaurant, Cantina 1838, that opened up around the corner from me in Harlem. The food tasted delicious and the ambiance was great. So I was a little excited and checked into the restaurant on Yelp. Now normally I wait until I’m leaving to check-in but didn’t see the harm since I was blocks from my home and not by myself.

So I’m sitting there having a good time enjoying the vibe when the waitress asks me if my name is Toya. In which I replied yes. Now I’m thinking whether or not we know each other. And I scan the room to see perhaps there was someone in the restaurant I knew. She then proceeds to tell me I have a phone call. Now I’m really dumbfounded. Anyone who is important to me would call my cell phone. And no one knew that I was at the restaurant. My mind is racing and I’m thinking about all the possibilities of who it could be. Maybe something happened?

Nope! Instead it was some weirdo who told me that he has been following my Twitter timeline and saw me check-in at the restaurant. He also started talking about how he wanted to meet me and things just got weird after that. I quickly told him I wasn’t interested and hung up the phone on him.

Whoa! Talk about social media going wrong. Sure, I have met my Twitter followers in person and it wasn’t awkward or weird. It was actually cool. I have several friends that I have met because of social media. But this dude was creepy. Really creepy.

So the lesson here boys and girls is to be very careful about when and where you check-in to places. Also take inventory of who is following you on social media. I actually have a tab set up on my Tweetdeck that tells me who are my new followers. I have been neglecting that tab lately. It’s time to go through and do some cleaning and block folks.

But I would like to mention that Cantina 1838 was the bomb! So much so that I had it again the next day. I hope I don’t where it out by going to it all the time. The food was delicious, the service was great and the vibe was cool. It’s now one of my favorite restaurants in Harlem. I absolutely love Mexican food. Maybe it’s because an itty bitty part of me may have some Mexican roots. Read about it here.

Do you have any weird social media moments? I’d love to hear about them.
