The last time I trimmed my hair was back in January.  Sixth months is long overdue for a trim.  I needed one badly because the ends of my hair were starting to knot up.  I had a scheduled appointment planned with my regular hair stylist Dickey, but I had to cancel last minute because I had to stay at work late.  Instead of rescheduling my appointment, I decided to keep some money in my pocket and make an appointment with his former assistant Dailey. I have gone to Dailey before for a trim so I knew I was in good hands. I know.  I cheated! I love Dickey. I really do. But in light of these tough economic times I had to budgetize (not a real word but you get my drift).

Natural Hair Blow Out 1I will admit that my hair looked crazy when I walked in to see Dailey.  But that’s because I don’t ever do anything with my hair when I have a hair appointment.  In my opinion, that is like cleaning up your house before the house cleaner comes.

Dailey pre-poo’d my hair with her oil concoction mix. She washed, conditioned, blew out and straightened my hair. According to her, my ends weren’t too damaged. Although I swear she took two inches off my hair. When will I get it through my thick skull that I don’t have that kind of hair that can go past 3 months for a trim?!?!

The weather was hot and humid that day so I came prepared with my scarf.  I thought I would wrap it (Doobie if you are in NYC) before I left but Dailey ended up putting my hair up in pin curls.  She tied the scarf really cute so that I could still go out in public and look decent.  I left my hair up this way all day.  I even took a nap with my hair pinned up.

Later on that night I took my hair down to see how it looked. I was scared that my hair would crinkle from the pins.  The curls looked great and I didn’t have any pin prints or crinkles.  I should have waited until the next day to take my hair down.  Now I was standing there with pins on my bathroom counter and no idea how to pin my hair back up.  Since I didn’t know how to pin curl my hair, I opted to wrap it instead.  And that night, thanks to YouTube, I gave myself a tutorial on how to pin curl.

Back in the 90s you couldn’t tell me nothing with my wrapped hair. I loved it. Now? Not so much.  I’m not too keen on my hair being wrapped anymore. It’s too flat.  I think fuller curls compliments my face better.

I had plans to go out with my friend that night.  I hadn’t even left the house and my hair was already starting to swell up.  The woes of natural hair.

Chocolat in Harlem

While every one was at 1st Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum, my friend Marilyn and I decided to stay uptown in Harlem.  It’s so nice to go out and only have to walk 5 blocks to your destination.  We started in Chocolat for drinks.

Then we walked over to this new lounge called Cove.  We gave it a walk through and wasn’t feeling the 10 to 1 girl to guy ratio.  What is up with that? Where do the straight men hang out in NYC?

As we were headed out the door it started pouring rain.  So we ended up hanging out in the entrance and did an impromptu photo-shoot.  We were there for at least 20 minutes until the big security guard told us we were blocking the entrance.  So we left and headed out to Harlem Tavern for some food.

Natural Hair Pin Curl Attempt

When I got home I decided to put what I learned from YouTube to use and pin curl my hair.  I posted the picture on Instagram and got some great feedback.  Apparently my curls weren’t flat enough to my head.  I will have to apply that advice for next time.

I took my pin curls out and they didn’t look too hot.  I combed them with my fingers and went out for a walk.

The curls had dropped a little bit during my walk.  (Please excuse the picture. I don’t have on any makeup or eyebrows)  I still think I like the pin curled look better than the wrap/doobie. What do you think?
