Last night I had the opportunity to check out an advanced screening of BET’s new series Being Mary Jane. I really didn’t know what to expect since I hadn’t seen any previews for the show. I cut my cable a while back so I don’t even have BET. It was great to go into the screening without having any expectations.
The synopsis states:
“Mary Jane Paul seemingly has it all as a beautiful and successful TV news anchor. In reality, she’s a self-sufficient powerhouse with a lackluster love life who remains devoted to a family that doesn’t share her motivation. How far is she willing to go to find the puzzle pieces that she – and society – insist are missing from her life? Intense drama and unforgettable moments unfold as Mary Jane juggles her life, her relationships, her work and commitments to her family.”
The movie, starring Gabrielle Union, debuts on the cable channel on July 2 at 10:30 pm. But the movie is just a teaser for the series that won’t start until January 2014. I don’t know if I can wait that long! Seriously! The series, created by Mara Brock Akil, also stars Richard Roundtree, Margaret Avery, Lisa Vidal, Richard Brooks, Omari Hardwick *swoon*, Tika Sumpter, Raven Goodwin, B.J. Britt, Aaron Spears, Latarsha Rose and Robinne Lee.
There was a photo booth at the screening where you could take pictures. The 2nd take in the photo booth always caught me off guard. This one came out halfway decent.

I really enjoyed the movie. I can’t wait until the series starts. From the storyline to the music, everything was on point. I can truly relate to the main character Mary Jane. I’m going to need Mara to get out of my head. After words there was a Q&A with Mara Brock Akil. I got a chance to talk to her for a bit and talk about her thoughts behing Being Mary Jane. If you haven’t seen the trailer, check it out below:

I’m glad the movie was good! I was a little leary of tuning in, mostly because Gabby is dating my husband, but I will put my personal feelings aside and watch. 🙂
ddorsey I am cracking up at your comment. Hilarious!!
Can’t wait to see the movie because it looks really good from the trailer. And Jan 2014 is a long time to wait but I guess with The Game coming back on this summer, they don’t want overload viewers. Glad you had fun and enjoyed the screening!
It was pretty good. I’m excited for the series to premiere in January.
