Last Saturday I was honored to be included in the first class of Dining with Bevy that took place at Aureole . Bevy Smith is legendary. She is a freelance writer who once held coveted positions such as a fashion executive at Rolling Stone and fashion editor-at-large for VIBE. A Harlem socialite who gets paid to speak about pop culture in all facets of TV and media, Bevy is also the sole creator of Dinner with Bevy.
Dinner With Bevy is a one-of-a-kind, dining extravaganza where host Bevy Smith links marketers and celebrities with movers and shakers in various fields to foster dynamic, long-lasting relationships. Bevy hand picks attendees from the worlds of art, entertainment, sports, media, fashion, philanthropy and more for an event that’s unique, personalized and fun: It’s Dinner With Bevy!
Bevy Smith has been a mentor in my head ever since I was introduced to her via Twitter from one of my good friends, Renee. She was one of the first people I started following when I joined Twitter. I had no clue at the time who she was but her tweets of wisdom resonated with me. I even ran out and bought “4-Hour Work Week” by Timothy Ferriss after she tweeted about how it was one of her go-to books. And who doesn’t want a 4 hour work week?
Bevy was very inspiring and talked about how important it was to fellowship. It wasn’t just about networking. She told us stories about how she left a high paying job to pursue her own interests. It wasn’t always easy but she persevered and came out on top. Now she works for herself and calls all the shots.
Essence Magazine’s own Emil Wilbekin was the guest of honor. He talked candidly about his start, his hiccups along the road and his current position. It was great to hear him speak so freely.
Bevy Smith and myself.
I ended up wearing a maxi dress because I was headed out to a BBQ after. I figured this was middle of the road. Dressy enough for brunch but not too dressy for a BBQ. Oh…and the illustrations you see of Bevy was done by my friend Tamika. I told you about her here. She is amazing!!
Here I am hanging out with friends at the BBQ after Bevy’s dinner. Fun times!!
