Last year I was able to spend Halloween with my nieces who I affectionately call "The Munchkins". Since I couldn’t be with them this Halloween, I decide that I wanted to send them something to let them know I was thinking about them. I was looking through one of my favorite mail order cookie catalogs and thought about sending them a "boo box" filled with Halloween Cookies.
Although I absolutely love these mail order cookies, I thought they were a little too expensive for my budget. So I decided to make my own cookies instead.
I just ended up using a basic sugar cookie recipe. But I did finally get to use the Mexican Vanilla my mom brought me from Honduras.
I purchased these Halloween themed Wilton cookie cutters from Michaels. (Of course I used a coupon!)
I frosted the cookies with royal icing. I used royal icing because it hardens when it dries. Once the cookies are dry I could stack them up and ship them out. This was my 1st time baking and decorating homemade sugar cookies. At least not since I was a young girl. So my hands were shaky and I didn’t get the technique down until my last cookie. But I’m hoping as I make more, I will get better.
My brother doesn’t like the girls to eat a lot of sweets so I decided to individually wrap each cookie to keep them fresh and it could easily be thrown into a lunch box.
I’ve had this project in the back of my head for a while and knew I needed cellophane bags to put the cookies in. I surfed the web and hit up my local Baking Supply Store. I either couldn’t find any or they were too pricey. Then I got the genius idea to just use my FoodSaver and seal the bags up myself.
It worked like a charm. I just sealed the part where the zip lock was located and it melted off. It was easy and the cheapest method of creating individual bags.
I packed everything up in a box along with a card and sent them both their own individual package. Don’t you remember when you were a child and how excited you got to receive mail??
The Munchkins called me this morning to tell me they received the package and that they were delicious. I swear I’m always baking for them. They know me as "The Baker". Every time I visit, they put in a baking request.
My brother said that I shouldn’t have wasted my time individually wrapping them since they aren’t going to last the weekend because they were so good. That made me smile!! I can’t wait to Skype with the lil’ ladies on Halloween so I can see them in their costumes. Can you believe the oldest munchkin has already put in a request to be Cinderella next Halloween? This Halloween hasn’t passed yet. I can’t knock her for pre-planning. She doesn’t get that from me!!

Your nieces are so cute. I love the idea of the Boo Box. I am going to do that for my family next year. Sweet idea.
Thanks lady!! You should make a “Boo Box” or do one for the upcoming Holidays. It’s very easy and economical. And I think your family will enjoy the personal touch.
So cute! I love decorative cookies…except for the taste. I wish chocolate chips weren’t so bulky. LOL
These sugar cookies were delicious. It all depends on what type of frosting you make. There are different variations of Royal Icing. But I know what you mean about them tasting funny.
